I am a five year old male that was recently adopted by a wonderful family that includes two young children, a dog and a cat. My new dog-sister is also five years old and the cat is a 6 year old male. The two young children are a boy and girl ages 4 and 2. When I was first introduced to the family, my dog-sister and I became great buddies. I even tolerate the cat well, being that I have never been around a cat before. I think he'd rather be left alone anyway. But he does occasionally come around for a snuggle once in a while. My concern is I am a little nervous around young children. You see, my previous family had a young child and I was the only pet. I understand that he was young, all of 3 years old, but he would tug at my ears and get right in my face and it made me nervous. I never reacted in a mean way but was such a nervous wreck. That is how I ended up with this wonderful new family who also has young children. When I watch the children play with my dog-sister, I kind of get jealous. I see her having fun and rolling around with them. They climb all over each other and it looks like a lot of fun and they all are happy. I just sit back and watch. When the children come over to me to get me to join in I just lay my head down. I really want this to be my forever home and be able to have fun with them. How can I get over my nervousness around children and just join in the family fun?

Dear Nervous,
When I was adopted into my new forever home it was a little nerve wracking for me as well. My previous family had a young child that actually poked me in the eye and I guess I didn't react well. My new parents were cautious with me around my new young human sister who was only 5 years old. I also bonded quickly with my new dog-sister who I came to see was very loving, affectionate and playful with the 5 year old child and in return the child was affectionate, loving and playful, too. I realized that by following my dog-sister's lead that the child would show me the same affection, love and playfulness. My anxiety swiftly went away and now it is all fun, laughter, love and especially awesome. Children are wonderful to be around. They just want to say hi, give a pat on the head and run and play with you. So run and play and have a good time. Oh, by the way, you can never give too many kisses. They love that!
